As the title of this site suggests, this site is a space to write about sports.  The site is an outgrowth of my sports-theme Advanced Writing courses at Miami University (Oxford, OH).  The title of this website, D-1 Sports Writing.  D-1 is, of course, short for Division 1, which is a reference to, and a play on, the NCAA’s top tier division of its three divisions of college sports.  However, this site is not exclusive to students.  Indeed, my students have their own space in this site titled, “Student Center.”  Rather, this site is for everyone who wants to engage in top-tier, D-1 level writing about sports.  In writing about sports, however, we will not simply discuss the latest scores in professional football (though there will be a space to discuss such things).  Instead, we will primarily engage in conversations about issues of identity (individual and collective), race, disability and special needs, obesity, religion, gender, class, politics, media culture, money, business, medicine and science as they pertain to high school, collegiate, and professional sports on a local, national, or global scale.  Most (if not all) of these posts will show up in the “Sports Talk” page of this website.  Also, there is a space in this website titled, “Writing Center,” where I will post writing activities for anyone who not only wants to write about sports, but also wants to better or sharpen their writing skills at the same time.
